I've devised a simple, efficient way to minimize the number of stupid requests we need to put up with on a day to day basis.

Like all good things, it begins with whiskey.

I'm too tired to write up a proper diary of what I've been up to in Austin and New Orleans right now, having just got home from a red eye flight. So I'll just write reviews of bands that I've seen since Wednesday, since that doesn't require much thought. You should be able to infer based on it most of what I've been doing.

I'd be remiss not to mention that blixco, your smoked meat is delicious, and audrey2/riceowlguy, I wasn't expecting to meet any other new husites, but it was nice to meet you both.

It got up to a balmy -3 degrees communist in paradise today, so I couldn't resist taking out my camera with my new 50mm f/1.8 lens and going for a  walk up the mountain.

(Attn Canadians: This diary contains no politics, despite the title. It's more of an excuse to post pictures of what a real Canadian winter should look like in between poorly written prose.)

Print Story A Question of Maths
Logic & Maths
By Driusan (Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 03:10:41 PM EST) (all tags)
With the Canadian and USian election looming, I'm trying to figure out a way to do realtime online polling which:
  1. Displays results of the question "Who do you intend to vote for?" and margin of error in realtime, rather than after being analyzed by a statistician and reported on by the media.
  2. Let's voters update their vote if they change their mind
  3. Isn't possible to link between a user and who they voted for.
The goal is to make it possible for a pundit or interested third party to say "How are the results looking now?" whenever they want, rather than whenever Angus Reid wants. Stats is far from my best math, so I'm not sure if the idea I just came up with will produce statisticly relevant results.

gzt? Help?

Music
By Driusan (Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 04:04:58 PM EST) (all tags)
Grunge has been dead since, what? 1996? 1997? Aren't the kids these days due for another angry rebellion against pop music? It's been over 10 years.

We've been through the shitty pop music that inevitably follows the downfall of every rebellious teenager musical period, we've been through the more melodious music which actually has some creativity that follows that, and the whiny "woe is me. I'm a man but I write poetry and no one understands me" music that runs more or less concurrently to the end of that and we seem to be stuck in a rut now.

It's time to rebel back to where we began. Nouveau Rock N' Roll, neo-punk, the grunge revival, I don't care care what the fuck you call it--but I'm tired of my music library, so get working.

Help!
By Driusan (Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 07:32:48 AM EST) (all tags)
Attn Amarok using Lunix infidels:

Do any of you know of a way to make Amarok exclude certain file types when scanning for music? I have it set to scan ~/, and when it does instead of just picking up MP3s, oggs and the like it picks up movies and adds the audiotrack from them to my library. If I keep my library on random, it keeps randomly throwing the audiotrack from porn into the playlist and after 3 or 4 minutes I find myself saying "Man, this song is really long" before realizing what's happening and needing to go through all the effort of hitting next. Needing to monitor the playlist really defeats the purpose of having it on random, so I'm looking for a way to say "Only search for files of type ..." or "Exclude files of type ..." or "Search for regexp ..." when scanning. It seems like it should be a trivial feature for any MP3 player that gets its library by scanning your hard drive, but somehow I can't find said setting.

Inside: review of a show I was at on Thursday (and obscure bandname dropping to prove how cool I am, yo.)

anonimouse is just trying to make this a more boring place.  I'd appreciate it if you'd bitch about your ex and/or (if they have a husi account) start a flamewar with them my diary.

If you refuse to do that and insist on posting your own diary to bitch, then make sure it doesn't go to the hole or cellar so that I can VS2FP.

Certainly, the city of Toronto has never produced any sculpture better than the one below.

Update [2007-12-30 22:17:39 by Driusan]: Taking a picture of the statue and the PFC have put me in a photograph-y kinda mood, so I just went downstairs and took a picture of my apartment building's laundry room and added it here.

How much does it cost to commission an artist to paint something, and how does one go about finding one?

I can pay in ramen and post-modernism and maybe cash.

On Monday I went out and tried to take some pictures for the next PFC (where P stands for photo!) and may or may not have gotten one worth submitting. I think I'll keep my eyes opened for something better before the submission diary is posted but in the meantime..

Inside: A picture I took that I definitely won't be submitting on account of it not having anything to do with animals.

Travel
By Driusan (Wed Nov 15, 2006 at 01:40:53 PM EST) (all tags)
I awoke this morning from a 20 hour nap, lying on a floor in my underwear somewhere in Switzerland. The sharp pain in my right ear that briefly woke me about 15 hours previously was gone, having migrated to my gums. I briefly considered a headline I read somewhere a few days ago: American Scientists Discover That Jetlag Can Be Fatal In Elderly Mice before trying to figure out how I got there.

Inevitably, ultimately, I always wound up back at HuSiStock. I never realized what a pivotally life changing event that was at the time (it was just a party), but in retrospect before that I had never met a single person from the internet. Now I've met 37 other HuSites in various contexts, on 2 continents and slept at at least 3 of their houses (depending on how you count).

All metawankery aside, inside's the more immediate and not at all exciting summary of how I wound up in Zürich after London, with a few pictures of the latter.
